A UNIQUE APPROACH
TREATING PAIN DIFFERENTLY WITH ACT
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based, empirically-validated treatment, with strong research to support its effectiveness in treating chronic pain. Dr. Brillhart designed Pain2Purpose (P2P) to treat the physical and emotional components of chronic pain, what he calls Capital 'P' Pain (CPP), as one single pain using ACT. Pain2Purpose is incorporated into all aspects of Beyond Pain's unique program, designed to help you take control of your life by getting well and staying well.

Accepting chronic physical and emotional pain
- Capitol 'P' Pain (CPP) - as uncontrollable events.

Changing how we respond to CPP.
-KNOWING THE DIFFERENCE-

Taking our lives back from CPP through
P2P interventions.

NON-MEDICATION PAIN MANAGEMENT
IMPROVING YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE
Our program is medication-free. While we don’t prescribe, manage, or administer pain injections, we offer multidisciplinary treatment in conjunction with your medical provider, to promote total mind and body healing. We help you manage your pain experience by treating your physical health, emotional health, and nutritional health together throughout the Pain2Purpose program.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR PAIN STORY

Our comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments allow our patients an opportunity to properly communicate their physical and emotional pain experiences which is critical in our patient's healing process. During this initial assessment, our patient’s comfort and safety are vital and that is why we promote a warm and welcoming atmosphere for you to begin the healing process of chronic pain.

MOVEMENT & MINDFULNESS

The trauma-informed yoga developed at our clinic helps patients identify their physical capabilities by regaining confidence in their body’s ability to navigate motion, mobility, and security in their movement. Yoga begins slowly and is tailored for each patient. The physical aspect of yoga is relatively small when compared to the therapeutic focus of balancing the central nervous system through neurological re-wiring. Patients engage in mindfulness training by creating safe experiences and observing problematic thoughts and sensations, versus the desire to experientially avoid these events.

EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or “Therapeutic Tapping,” combines elements of acupoint stimulation, exposure therapy, and cognitive restricting (think of it as acupuncture—without needles). For those suffering from chronic pain, the results of regular EFT practice can reduce a person's perception of pain, increase coping abilities and acceptance, and improve their quality of life.

NUTRITIONAL HEALING

For many of our patients, chronic pain is directly impacted by their diet. We support our patients based on their pain etiology, goals, and ability to implement these therapeutic changes on their own. Nutritional counseling is facilitated by Melissa Hedstrom, Nutritional Therapist, a recognized expert on nutrition for chronic pain. Patients are taught to properly prepare nutrient-dense whole food (e.g., food that has not been “diluted” by modified refined starches, sugars, or solid fats). Proper nutrition is key to reducing chronic pain, healing, and mental health functioning.

GROUP PROCESSING & SUPPORT

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an empirically validated, SAMHSA-approved, third-wave behavioral therapy approaching human suffering through mindful acceptance of uncontrollable events while actively pursuing valued living. ACT is the behavioral change component in guiding patients to increase their quality of life amidst the grip of pain. Group therapy is facilitated by Dr. Brillhart, an internationally-recognized ACT expert, to address the emotional and physical pain components of chronic pain.

PEER SUPPORT

We know how hard it can be to implement lifestyle changes to drastically change overall health and well-being. That is why we focus on coaching our patients through their health journey every step of the way with intentional support to ensure they are successful at adopting new and healthy lifestyle changes.

INDIVIDUALIZED BRIEF-FOCUSED PSYCHOTHERAPY

Appointments are scheduled as clinically indicated, with our mental health professionals to address and promote mental health wellness associated with chronic pain.

His success using ACT in conjunction with EMDR and BSP has provided emotional and physical healing of chronic pain, trauma, and anger, with various individuals, couples, and groups in diverse clinical settings. Dr. Brillhart has considerable forensic/correctional clinical experience using ACT with high-risk, special needs, and serious, persistent mental illness offenders in maximum-security settings. His research in this area was presented at several national and international conferences; he is also internationally recognized for his expertise and workshop training on ACT. In 2017, Dr. Brillhart authored a book chapter on ACT in Individual Psychological Therapies in Forensic Settings (Davies & Nagi, Eds., 2017). Scott Kobold, MFT

Associate Therapist
Scott Kobold is one of our clinic's Associate Therapists who grew up in Montana's capital, Helena, before proudly serving in the United States Navy. After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Montana, he worked as a marketing consultant for over a decade. For Scott, however, this career path was an unfulfilling grind that felt regrettably like work. Profoundly helping others is not work to him but rather his true passion, so he ultimately gravitated toward the mental health field. After graduating with his Master of Arts in Psychology degree from the University of Massachusetts, becoming a therapist at the Beyond Pain Clinic was far and away his primary goal. He and co-owner Shelly Carlson had been colleagues for the better part of a decade, and he knew the culture of her clinic was one of compassion where both he and the patients he would serve would receive the highest levels of support and care. The clinic's holistic approach to helping patients improve their quality of life was especially appealing; he recognized that their methods are legitimately life-changing because they address the root causes of physical and emotional pain rather than mask their symptoms. Now, after serving patients at Beyond Pain for over a year, Scott couldn't be happier with his career path, and he gets to fulfill his passion every day he comes to work. He also paints, shoots photography, and plays the drums, and to say he is a music aficionado is an understatement for the ages. Scott and his wife Amanda have a baby girl, and traveling with them and his family is when he's happiest. Fun facts: Scott became the first person in his family to work a security detail for a US President, to earn bachelor's and master's degrees, and to be broadcast around the globe via the world wide web as a college radio deejay.

GIORGIANNA CARLISLE

New Patient Onboarding Coordinator
Giorgianna is Beyond Pain's New Patient Onboarding Coordinator. Having grown up in Portland, Oregon, Giorgianna had access to various fun and unique food venues that she got to try; this facilitated a love for trying new restaurants and food that she had never experienced before. Along with that, she also enjoys running, baking, and traveling. Giorgianna graduated from Azusa Pacific University with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater and continues to pursue her love for acting and storytelling in her spare time. One of Giorgianna’s favorite aspects of Beyond Pain's "Pain2Purpose" Program is the community that the patients build during the program and the hope that they walk away with when they finish. Giorgianna’s goal for each patient who works with Beyond Pain is to feel supported, encouraged, and set up for success as they participate in the "Pain2Purpose" Program.
